There are a lot of exciting things happening here at AllAboutDarien.com, and we haven’t even officially launched yet! Nevertheless, since you’re here, I am very happy to welcome The Darien Sport Shop as AllAboutDarien.com’s Charter Sponsor. I can think of no more appropriate sponsor for a website All About Darien than one of the town’s oldest, most successful and respected retailers for the past 60 years.
As someone who grew up with “the Sport Shop” as a downtown Darien mainstay and premiere destination for a variety of items ranging from ski equiptment and outdoor apparel (Patagonia, The North Face) to ties for Dad for Father’s Day (Salvatore Ferragamo) and a purse (Vera Bradley) for Mom for Christmas, I can personally attest to the quality and unique variety of their (very high-end) merchandise…. but what has always been more impressive to me is their level of personal service.
Now wait, before you roll your eyes and write me off as just brown-nosing my Charter Sponsor, let me tell you something: when you walk into the department store-like store, and the founder and owner, known as “Mr. Z,” comes up to you and asks you how your 94 year-old grandmother, who used to purchase her perfume there and hasn’t been in the store for probably 5 years, is doing, it’s pretty darn impressive.
I know, now YOU wish you had a 94 year-old grandmother about whom Mr. Z (Steve Zangrillo, by the way) could inquire when YOU walk through the door, but I have good news: there is still hope that you, too, can experience that warm and fuzzy valued-shopper-and-neighbor feeling. During my recent visit with them I learned that they make a point to hire full-time specialists for each department, which will improve the chance that each time you come in to shop for, oh, I don’t know, maybe a new pair of shoes or custom-tailored suit, you will be remembered too.
Add to that thoughtful and useful customer services, including: monogramming, gift-wrapping AND shipping (whew – long-distance birthday present, done in one fell swoop!) on-the-spot tailoring (making it possible to glide out of the store in your fabulous new Diane von Furstenberg sundress, perfectly hemmed), personal shopping, and even shopping By Appointment, and I think it’s pretty clear why they continue to thrive as a store.
