Welcome to AllAboutDarien.com’s first annual “Pink” Post.
While October is all about pink and there is lots going on around Fairfield County to raise awareness for Breast Cancer, which you can find out more about at the official Paint The Town Pink site, the AllAboutDarien.com Pink Post will highlight Darien-based activities and events to encourage participation and awareness among our community members.
Kicking off the month on Thursday evening, October 2nd, is the 2008 International Wine Tasting and Auction event, sponsored by the Darien Chamber of Commerce to benefit the Smilow Family Breast Health Center at Norwalk Hospital and the Stamford Hospital’s Women’s Breast Center. It is being held at Nielsen’s Greenhouse and Gardens, and the wines are sponsored by WinePort of Darien, and the event promises to be a very fun evening of “around the world” wine tasting for a great cause! To find out more and/or RSVP, call: 203.655.3600.
This Saturday, October 4th, is the first annual “Mile of Pink,” and if you haven’t signed up yet don’t wait another minute — and you have to get your T-shirt, too!
Also this weekend, October 4th-5th, we have at least one Darien resident who will be walking the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, the equivalent of a marathon AND a half, in NYC — help her achieve her fundraising goal and wish her - and her team — all the best for this challenge!
On Wednesday morning, October 8th, from 10am to noon, you can enjoy coffee, check out the latest fall fashions, shop with friends and enjoy a major savings pass and fabulous door prizes at The Darien Sport Shop’s “The Power of Pink, A Breakfast Parade of Styles.”
And, this is something you might not have known: Williams & Warren, AllAboutDarien.com’s preferred body and skincare clinic, also offers special cancer care services, performed by The New York Presbyterian Hospital’s renowned reconstructive and plastic surgeon, Dr. Gregory S. LaTrenta. Gift certificates are available for these special services, and can you think of a better way to treat that brave woman you know to something wonderful in support of her strength and/or success? To find out more, click here.
Williams & Warren also hosts a special event each October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, and this year it is A Woman’s Forum on Thursday, October 16th, at 7pm at the Country Club of Darien. The forum is dedicated to educating women of all ages about our faces, skin and bodies as we grow older. Two highly respected physicians, Dr. Gregory LaTrenta and Dr. Edward Jacobson, will speak on these subjects, discuss surgical and non-surgical options for retaining a youthful appearance outside and vitality within, and answer questions. Bring your sister and your girlfriends and your mom for this complimentary, exciting and informative evening!
Help me add to the Pink Post : let me know about other Darien “paint the town pink” or breast cancer awareness events or initiatives happening in the community so I can keep us all up to date!

Hi again, it’s Jan … and I’ve been shopping!
Sometimes, wandering off the beaten path in Darien pays off! A new kitchen/bath/tile accessories and home store has opened on the Post Road.
D&D Fine Homes is located at 1918 Post Road, right between St. Luke’s and St. John’s. They have a beautiful new showroom and make all their own cabinetry. Many of their tiles are quite unique. Their showroom isn’t even finished yet, but what is there is lovely.

Speaking of fun events offered by the Darien YMCA (see post below), with the school holiday (Rosh Hashanah) coming up Tuesday, it might be helpful to know that for those of you who do not celebrate the holiday there is a way to still keep the kids occupied in a fun and constructive way …
Vacation Camp is available at the Darien YMCA during most Darien Public School holidays. Offered for 3 year olds thru 5th graders. 1/2 day (9 - 1 p.m.) & full day programs available, as well as extended care. Activities include swimming, crafts, gym, outside play, theme days, special field trips and more.
How cool is that? As a working mom myself, this is SUCH a great program to know about. Hope it’s a helpful tip!
Also, don’t forget about the JOBS Office at the Darien High School as another resource for finding a babysitter for school days off.
