Something You Never Knew You Might Not Know

Well, I just had kind of a “duh” moment … and one of my rules of thumb about guiding this site’s content is that, if I didn’t know something, I’m probably not the only one.  (case in point: luminaries at Christmastime) So here it is.

I grew up in the Royle School district, very near to Darien High School and Wee Burn Golf Club.  I spent a lot of time outside, in my backyard, either (begrudgingly) raking leaves with my family or playing Charlie’s Angels or just daydreaming up in my favorite tree.  There was a sound, kind of like a big clap, that I would always hear in the distance … but I figured it was maybe the band practicing at DHS or some construction nearby where heavy blocks of concrete were being dropped.  I don’t know what I thought it was: but through the years I did think the timing was odd for band practice, and was surprised by how there always seemed to be a house being built somewhere nearby, even on Sundays ….

Today, while leaving a meeting at a church in that area, I heard the familiar “pow” echo through the air and my husband said “Ah, they’re out skeet shooting at Wee Burn.”  And it took a seond or two for me to make the connection between his comment and that sound: but then I stopped in my tracks.  THAT is the sound, Wee Burn offers skeet shooting!?!  Now Wee Burn members would of course know this, and they enjoy other fun and different recreational facilities at the Golf Club like a little bowling alley … but I, a Tokeneke-er, just. never. knew.  So there you go!
