The BUZZ About The Playground By The BEACH

| July 5, 2009 | 2 Comments

Move over, Cherry Lawn, there’s a NEW playground in town and it’s at WEED BEACH!!

After spending numerous hours at Darien’s new Playground By The Sound with my toddler over the past four days, all I can say is that it is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

The gigantic play structure in the shape of a boat is fun for kids of all ages, offering all kinds of bells and whistles: wind chimes, climbing walls, funky slides (which, by the way, are at an appropriate slope for little tykes as well as the bigger ones), high-tech “bouncy” bridges, monkey bars, steering wheels, and more.  What I enjoy about the structure is that it is mostly enclosed, so I don’t have to worry about my toddler falling out of open spaces.  Another SUPER cool feature is that the surface of the structure itself, including the flooring, bridges, slides, etc, doesn’t get hot so is always comfortable for bare feet and climbing.  Amazing considering this thing is smack dab in the middle of a beach!

Speaking of which, the whole playground is covered in the same soft sand as what’s on the beach, and the breeze from the water makes the spot truly enjoyable.  As do the two water features (oh yes, I said water features!) where little ones can experiment with channeling streams, wet sand, and so much more.  There is a generously-sized swing set that includes both regular swings and baby swings, also on the sand and overlooking the sound, and there are beach toys and play items available for kids to play with.

The positioning of the playground is perfect: an extension of the beach, close to the shore — yet far enough away that you’d have ample time to catch up with a little one making a break for it.  There is also a fence planned for added security … but in the meantime, it’s a great balance of beach and fun.

Keep in mind that this is on a beach, so there’s really no shade other than that provided by sections of the play structure … don’t forget the sunblock!

A completely refurbished beach house and concession stand were also part of the renovation plan, but have been put on hold due to the economy … in the meantime, there is a public restroom — which is, you know, a public beach restroom.  Enough said, I think.

All in all this playground is truly an amazing gift to our community FROM the private donations BY our community, so THANK YOU and enjoy!
