Guide to Election Day in Darien 2015

On election day, Democrats and Republicans come together over one issue: THERE IS NO SCHOOL. What’s a voting parent to do? (Note: our vacation camp mainstay, the Darien YMCA, does not offer a camp for Election date).

  • Kids U in Stamford has vacation camp for kids ages 3-9 in the afternoon from 1-4. It is $50 for the first child and $45 for each additional sibling.
  • Overtime Athletics offers a one-day camp at SoNo Field House for kids in kindergarten through grade 6. This camp runs from 9 am to 4:30 pm and includes all manner of sports in the incredible SoNo Field House facility. At $35 per child, it’s also very affordable. (Update: We have heard that the election day camp is sold out, but you may want to give a call to confirm: 203-831-0405).

If you don’t need childcare for the day but instead are looking for ways to keep busy all together, there are some great programs nearby:

  • From 1-3pm, New Canaan Nature Center is offering a FREE Awesome Autumn Day, that includes fields games and activities and even a pumpkin slingshot.
  • From 11am-3pm the Stamford Nature Center has their annual Election on the Farm program which allows kids to vote for their favorite farm animal. There are self-guided crafts, a scavenger hunt, and a local ice cream tasting from 2:30 to 3 pm (all activities included with admission).
  • Also, parking passes are no longer required at Tod’s Point and Compo Beach, and those are lovely spots to take in this unseasonably warm (but delightful!) weather.
  • Finally, Leaf Pickup has begun so you can send those kids who are SOOOOOOOOO BORED out to the yard with some rakes (or better yet, send them to my house!)

As for election 411, if you’re not sure which district you’re in and where you should vote, you can find a listing of districts by street name by clicking here (Person-to-Person will have collection boxes for non-perishable food items at each polling place). For the Voters Guide Compiled by the League of Women Voters, click here. Also, if you happen to be voting at Town Hall (Districts 2 & 5) or just want to swing by, flu shots will be offered as part of the annual “Vote & Vax” program from 3-7pm (shots are $30 and available to anyone age 3 or over).
